Whipmaking DVD Results: Noah’s Whips

I want to show some of pictures of the whips made by Noah A., one of my long time whip customers who recently got a copy of my whip making DVD.

Here’s some of what he had to say:

I thought I would give you a little feed back on your DVD.  I found the detail where to drop certain strands and plaiting in a odd number of strands very useful.  As I had been just waiting for the strands to start to bunch up before dropping two strands at the same time, always ending up with a  lump and gaps in my thong. It was quite frustrating, so your video was a huge help in that regard.

Here’s the Florida  Cow Whip that Noah made:

Now, some people think that because my DVD doesn’t specifically deal with bullwhips, then it is not useful for making bullwhips. That’s not a correct assumption. Most of the techniques I teach in regards to plaiting and dropping strands are exactly what I do with my bullwhips. Using Ron Edwards’ book and some other online tutorials, it’s not too hard to go from cow whips to bullwhips. So far, I have had a number of people to make bullwhips using my DVD combined with a the other resources. (And yes, there is a bullwhip making video in the works, but I do not have a targeted release date yet!)

Here’s Noah’s bullwhip:

Noah tells me he figured out how to make the bullwhip using the DVD and by studying the 6ft bullwhip I sold him last year. It looks to me like he’s done a really nice job.

There was time as a whipmaker that I saw other upstart whipmakers as a threat to my business and I would’ve never thought of giving out as much information as I do on my DVDs. After a decade online, I’ve come to a place where I know I cannot possibly make all the whip orders that come my way and I need other whipmakers to help me out. It actually makes me happy to see people being able to make nice whips using my DVDs.

For many of my DVD customers, they have already been able to sell some whips and pay for the investments they made in the DVD and whip making supplies! These folks didn’t just buy a “how-to video,” they invested in a rewarding hobby that will more than pay for itself in a short period of time.

If you’re interested in making whips for yourself or for profit, I encourage you to get a copy of my Florida Cow Whip Tutorial DVD today!

Taipan’s Review of My Whipmaking DVDs

For years, “Taipan” of DallasDogSled.com has maintained one of the only cow whip tutorials on the web. I have referred countless people to his site for information on making whips and it has been a help to many. Recently Taipan got a copy of my Florida Cow Whip Tutorial DVDs. The following is his assessment of my production:

Supersonic Synthetics

A review of Rhett’s Cow Whip tutorial

Tony Layzell’s review of Rhett’s Cow Whip tutorial says “If your looking to improve your current whip making ability, looking to make a whip for the first time or like me just a collector then click the banner, visit Rhett and buy the DVD set off him, I can’t recommend them high enough, a really comprehensive, educational, value for money purchase I think…..”

I cannot agree more.  I have watched the DVD’s more than a couple of times and want to add my recommendation that any aspiring whip maker get this DVD to put in their toolbox.

He starts off the DVD talking a bit about the history of the Cow Whip and even a bit about the Cow Cavalry which brought a smile to this old troopers face.  I can never get enough history so I would have liked to have seen a bit more but I am happy that he put me on the track to learn more about the ancestry and use of the Cow Whip.  It is fun to know that you are making your own version of what was probably the first kind of whip ever to reach the American continent.

I was a bit disappointed with the production value of the DVD.  Rhett has talked about the difficulty he experienced with producing the DVD and I certainly would have done no better.  That said, making a video is much like making a whip.  Function first and the video does a great job of teaching how to make a whip.  The lighting is good enough so that, usually, the details are easy to see.  Focus was sometimes a problem but it is not even enough of one to require more than a couple of rewinds.

The audio is good and Rhett has a pleasant voice that is easy to understand.  There is a bit of background echo since he was not in a sound studio but it is not a distraction.  Okay, the birds had their say about the process but I have birds too and they can be heard in the background of most of the videos I have made.

Rhett repeatedly says that “Whatever works for you” and “If it works for you” that is the way to do it and this video shows his way.  I have my way and you will have your way to do things.  When we learn from one another it is more tools in the toolbox and I am very appreciative of learning from one of the best whip makers there is.

Learning to plait is an individual skill that is not really covered in this presentation.  He shows how he does it without going into detail.  Watching his hands fly is a joy to see.

He covers his method of dropping strands very well and I am going to try his method next time I sit down at my vice to make a new whip.  He hangs his whip from a door jam and plaits “from the hook” in the way of the old timers.  I am not that good so to prevent my whips from looking like a candy cane I need the crutch of the vice.

I was thrilled with the way he made his tapering twist.  I will probably still call it the twisted fall without meaning any disrespect to him.  I will try this method too since I have always hated the necessity of using what he called “Machines and different do-dads”.  His method is so much easier than the way I had been doing it.  I hope my hands are strong enough to complete the process.

I will probably not tie off the end of the whip as he does but knowing the process is a huge help when it comes time to replace the fall on an well used whip.  I have some that are going on 10 years old including the old “Garden Hose” whip.  One day I will need to make a repair and this is yet another great tool in the box.

Speaking of extras he spent a good bit of time explaining how to splice in a strand.  This is a great part of the DVD which I rewound more than once to 14:23.  He even dropped a stitch at 17 minutes and I have done that more times that I can count.  It was great that he showed how to recognize and correct that common problem in whip making.

The use of the lacing needle is an important part of making what he calls Synthetic and Supersonic and which I am going to steal for the title of this review.  His way seems quick and easy but again I am still going to cut my strands at an angle with a hot knife to thread my needles.  “If it works for you” that is the way to do it.

As for the wax, again I think he has convinced me that it is worth the effort so I am going to give it another try.  I was not happy with the result the first couple of times I did it early on in my whip making so I quit.  I will have to report later on the result.

His handle is beautiful.  Mine never look so good and my method is somewhat dangerous if not downright crazy.  I do like the shape he has made and his method of finishing it has changed my mind completely on the way I will do things in the future.  This alone was worth the price of the DVD just in savings of money spent at Home Depot.

In conclusion, do yourself a big favor and buy the DVD.  You will save enough time and money to recoup the investment many times over.  That said this not the most important thing you will gain from this DVD.  Most aspiring whip makers fail and quit.  There are half finished whips balled up and put in storage all over Texas for sure and surly more across the country and even world.  Rhett’s presentation teaches you to relax and make creating your own Supersonic Synthetic fun and not a chore.  Put Ben Dehart’s song “Cow Hunter Dreams” on in the stereo and enjoy what you are creating.

Cow Whip Tutorial Follow Up: Leon’s Cow Whip

Going forward, I will be posting photos that people send me of the cow whips they’ve made using my nylon whipmaking tutorial DVDs. I’m getting lots of great feedback and hope to have lots of pics to show here as time goes by.

The whip in the photo here was made by Leon S. in Canada. Leon was already established as a whipmaker before getting my video, but in his blog he notes that he learned a few new tricks and was pleased with it. Leon did a fine job in my opinion. Leon obtained the handle from another Canadian whipmaker;  it really looks awesome with the thong he plaited.

Anyone interested in ordering a copy of my Florida Cow Whip Tutorial may email me at Rhettswhips @ yahoo .com for more information. The DVDs are $85.00 with shipping included in the U.S.A.; they normally ship within one business day after payment has been received.

Here’s a link to Leon’s blog where you can read his comments about the tutorial.

Tony Layzell Reviews Cow Whip Tutorial DVDs!

Cow Whip Tutorial DVD Review by Tony Layzell

October 11, 2010

Rhett Kelly Cow Whip Tutorial DVD

I received my copy of the tutorial DVD recently and wanted to put pen to paper and sing its praises now I’ve watched it….

I think Rhett was a little surprised I wanted to buy a copy, I kind of collect DVD’s  in the same way that some folks collect whips, I’ve got as far as I know one of every tutorial that’s out there relating to whips and plaiting. I always figure you’ll get from them at least a few new things to try out or if by chance your own construction methods are identical you at least know you’re doing it right, and over and above that I just like them….

Production Quality

I saw Rhett posting on a forum about the difficulty he had experienced with editing, lighting etc, I have to say I was very  pleasantly surprised when my parcel arrived, the front cover is really nicely done, the box opens and the two discs are presented on a plastic insert that turns like the page of a book so that amused me greatly…..the discs themselves have a photo on them and are clearly marked so there is no confusion as to which one to play first, that’s real handy if you’re a thick old English man. A really professional job I think.

The Disc Content

Well where to begin is the problem:-

Regards the quality, lighting etc then this is fantastic, very clear crisp sharp picture and no problem at all hearing what Rhett is saying, a really good job…

Content…..I’m going to start a little bit back to front here with the handle which on the DVD Rhett does after the thong, you see the handle formed from the blank bit of wood right through to where it is ready to be attached to the thong, if you have a lathe and can use it all the information you need is there  but realistically if you don’t have a lathe and the skill set to use that lathe, like me, then you’re not going to be churning out cow whip handles, however Rhett sells handles, something I’d not cottoned on to before, so if you can’t do your own then having seen the work that goes into one and the small price charged why not buy them from Rhett, he is clearly a master at it…..I thought it really quite clever that he had covered both options here and now I know he sells handles will be treating myself to a matched pair in the new year…..

So back to the beginning, it starts out giving you a whole host of information on the tools you need, where to get them from and my favourite part was the history of the Florida Cow Whip, I told Rhett before I bought that I’m sure he’d educate me and he did…..He also shows several books that will come in handy if you’re starting out, all in all very comprehensive and informative…

The tutorial then starts proper, well what can I say, fantastic, Rhett has covered every minute detail in an easy to understand way, I have absolutely no doubt at all that a total novice could with a little patience build a Florida Cow whip to a very reasonable standard first go and with practice and by watching the DVD over and over in a very short space of time be able to build them to a commercial sellable standard….Brilliant!

Waxing, I really watched this section hard, I tried and dismissed waxing when I first started making nylon whips so have a very expensive double boiler and sacks of wax sat doing nothing under a bench in my workshop, I now realise that my experiments with wax saw me not heating the wax to anywhere near hot enough or leaving the whip in the wax anywhere near long enough……..so for me this part of the tutorial was the most educational by far……..my range of nylon whips very much has it’s own reputation built up over time so I’m not intending to start waxing all my whips now, however in the new year when my workbook is a little quieter I am going to drag my boiler out, do a few experiments and then once I have sussed waxing at least offer it as an option on my site, cheers Rhett, told you you’d educate me…..

I can’t not mention the out takes, another favourite part for me, very funny and nice to see another side to Rhett too……

In conclusion

If your looking to improve your current whip making ability, looking to make a whip for the first time or like me just a collector then click the banner, visit Rhett and buy the DVD set off him, I can’t recommend them high enough, a really comprehensive, educational, value for money purchase I think…..

Cheers

Tony

If you would like to be added to the list, please email me at Rhettswhips @ Yahoo.com with your contact info and “whipmaking DVD” in the subject line.
